Given how difficult it is to reach the highest tiers of motorsport, it's almost surprising how many children of former racing drivers reach F1. A famous surname certainly helps when it comes to attracting sponsorship, but heritage comes with added expectation and pressure.

Having a well-financed junior career - which plenty of former F1 drivers can clearly provide - is a huge help, although what better way to learn the subtleties of racecraft than from a parent who's been there and done it? Several sons have followed their fathers into F1, and the wider motorsport world is filled with family connections. There's even a dynasty or two that have racked up unprecedented success across multiple generations.

Perhaps the most famous father-son pairing in F1. Graham Hill's F1 career spanned 17 years, during which he was crowned world champion twice; once in driving for BRM and again in for Lotus. To date he is the only driver to win the triple crown, winning the Indythe 24 Hours of Le Mans and the Monaco Grand Prix as a driver.

He won the latter of these five times in the s, earning him the nickname 'Mr Monaco'. Graham Hill died in a plane crash when son Damon was still a teenager, and several years passed before the younger Hill took up motor racing. Initially racing motorbikes, Damon Hill eventually found his way into F1 as a test driver for Brabham. He then moved to Williams, where he earned all but one of his 22 grand prix victories and sole world title in Regarded as one of the finest drivers of his day, Gilles Villeneuve raced in F1 from until his death at the Belgian Grand Prix in He made his debut with McLaren but raced exclusively for Ferrari thereafter, winning six grands prix during his career.

He was never crowned world champion but he came close infinishing second behind team-mate Jody Scheckter. He very nearly became world champion in his debut season, narrowly missing out to team-mate Damon Hill, but he went one better in after a famous battle with Michael Schumacher.

The German driver led the standings heading into the final race at Jerez, but was disqualified from the championship after colliding with Villeneuve in the closing stages of the grand prix. Villeneuve only saw the podium four more times after that, and he left the sport mid-way through the season.

It wasn't until that he secured a competitive drive, signing for Williams alongside Carlos Reutemann initially, followed by Mario Andretti for a single race and then Derek Daly for the remainder of the season. Rosberg clinched the title that year despite only winning one grand prix, the joint-lowest of any championship-winning driver, level with Mike Hawthorn's campaign in Rosberg took the chequered flag five times in his F1 career, but his son Nico was even more successful.

Enjoying the peak of the team's dominance at the start of the V6 turbo-hybrid era, Rosberg amassed 23 grand prix wins and took his tally to 57 podium finishes, culminating in a world title in after pipping team-mate Lewis Hamilton by just five points.

Days later, Nico announced his shock retirement. Jos Verstappen raced in F1 for eight seasons in 10 years, starting at Benetton in and ending with Minardi in He also raced for Simtek, Footwork, Tyrrell, Stewart and Arrows, scoring points just seven times from starts.

His F1 career peaked early, with a pair of podium finishes at the Hungarian Grand Prix and Belgian Grand Prix inalthough Michael Schumacher was able to win eight races and the drivers' title with the same car that year. Though his achievements in F1 were limited, Jos was able to pass a great deal of knowledge on to son Max, guiding the youngster whose mother Sophie was a karting champion in her own right through a glittering junior career that led to an F1 debut at the age of just Since then he has established himself as one of the best drivers on the grid, racking up 10 victories and 42 podiums despite rarely having the fastest car.

Jan Magnussen enjoyed a brief stint in F1, making a one-off appearance for McLaren in before a season-and-a-half with Stewart between and The German driver looked set to be partnered by Nick Heidfeld, only for Schumacher to announce his shock return to F1 with Mercedes after three years away. Throughout his career, Schumacher has consistently beaten his team-mate, but in Rosberg he found a younger, more formidable competitor. And the chances of the year-old delivering on his aim of trying to add to his seven world championships looked bleak as Rosberg comprehensively him in his first full season back in by points to Schumacher was just 13 points behind in but overall Rosberg held the advantage with points to Though the German produced an impressive drive to finish seventh and score points in Brazil, having found himself last and a lap down after picking up a puncture, he still trails Rosberg in overall points finishes — 31 v However, Schumacher can take some comfort in the fact that his results suffered as a result of a number of retirements, the majority of them mechanical, throughout his time with Mercedes.

The elder German suffered 15 retirements compared to seven for Rosberg. That gap increases from seven to 13 if you include retirements. It becomes bleaker reading for Schumacher when we turn out attention to qualifying.

Schumacher achieved the quickest overall time once, in Monacothough he started sixth after a grid penalty. The German only ever started on the front row once which was in China when he was promoted from third to second as a result of a penalty for Lewis Hamilton. Rosberg started on pole once in China, which he converted into victory, and had one other front row start. As you will see from the statistics below, Rosberg beat Schumacher in every category expect for DNFs to show the elder German was comprehensively beaten by his team-mate for the first time in his glittering career.

Our mission is to help leaders in multiple sectors develop a deeper understanding of the global economy. Our flagship business publication has been defining and informing the senior-management agenda since 1964. Article - McKinsey Quarterly - October 2016 Chinese consumers: Revisiting our predictions By Yuval Atsmon and Max Magni Chinese consumers: Revisiting our predictions Article Actions Share this article on LinkedIn Share this article on Twitter Share this article on Facebook Email this article Download this article As their incomes rise, Chinese consumers are trading up and going beyond necessities.

In 2011, we tried our hand at predicting the ways in which, in the decade to come, Chinese consumers would change their preferences and behaviors. This article takes stock of those predictions. Why check in now. Another is a comprehensive new McKinsey survey, which follows nearly ten years of previous research that includes interviews with more than 60,000 people in upward of 60 cities in China.

Deeper and more nuanced understanding of Chinese consumers can help reveal fresh opportunitiesfor new entrants and incumbents alikeand signal those areas where established players may need to be more wary. While geographic differences persist, Chinese consumers are, on the whole, more individualistic, more willing to pay for nonnecessities and discretionary items, more brand loyal, and more willing to trade up to more expensive purchaseseven as their hallmark pragmatism endures.

Just as it was then, generalizing about Chinese consumers continues to be almost as difficult (and maybe as foolish) as it is to generalize about European consumers. We predicted these differences would remainand even grow more significant, especially in the consumption patterns and tastes that relate to discretionary items.

To help companies better tailor their go-to-market approach, we grouped most cities in China into clusters based on their similarities, including their geographic proximity and the transportation infrastructure that connects them. Furthermore, when our latest survey compared the consumers in the Shanghai area to those around Beijing and Hangzhou, certain spending attitudes also showed marked differences.

For example, brand loyalty increased much faster in Shanghai (24 percent increase in three years versus just 7 percent in Beijing and 9 percent in Hangzhou), as did the willingness to pay for better or healthier products. Despite geographic differences, there are broad similarities among Chinese consumers. These mirror the general trends economists have found among consumers around the world as economies develop.

The general tendency is for consumers, as they earn more, to spend a lower percentage of their income on food, a little more on healthcare, and even more on travel and transportation, as well as on recreational activities. It was no great stretch then, in our report five years ago, to predict a significant shift in consumption from necessities and seminecessities into discretionary categories. Sure enough, our new survey shows Chinese consumers following the anticipated pattern.

When we asked how they plan to increase spending as their income increases, dramatically fewer consumers said they will increase it on food (46 percent in the latest survey, compared to the 76 percent who said they would do so three years earlier). Responses trended slightly up for healthcare products (from 16 percent to 17 percent), and increased for travel (from 14 percent to 23 percent) and leisure (from 17 percent to 25 percent). In our previous predictions, we also argued that as the income of Chinese consumers grew, they would aspire to improve their quality of life by not only spending more on discretionary items, but also by shifting their spending to more expensive items in the same categories.

In necessity categories such as food, for example, we predicted consumers would be willing to spend more for healthier versions of the same productsfor instance, that olive oil would grow much faster than less healthy (and less expensive) oils.We are now home safe and sound and happy to be sharing the pictures and memories of our trip with our friends and family.

Thank you so much for your professionalism and organization and frequent correspondence. This was a complicated trip with all the different places we visited and means of transportation. It would have been far too much for me to plan this all on my own. So without you this trip would not have happened. I look forward to planning a trip with you in the future. I would love to take my husband to Norway, perhaps in the summer this time. Or maybe we will come see you in Iceland. My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our trip -- it was excellent.

Your company was very responsive and helpful in the planning of our trip.

The materials you provided were very good, and the pacing of the trip (driving route and stops) and quality of the accommodations were excellent. The maps, itinerary notes, and cell phone were especially helpful to have, as well as access to the video on driving in Iceland. Overall, it was a great experience, and would consider coming back in a future year, with additional destinations beyond Iceland.

The most enjoyable holiday we have been on. The Icelandic people always made us very welcome and had high standards of service. We were thrilled and have already passed along your website to friends. Thank you so much for planning such a spectacular holiday for us. We plan to return and would love to work with NV again.

We've been all around the world and agree that Iceland is at the top of our favorites. Hi Erla and Bjorg, I just wanted to drop you a quick note to let you know what a wonder time we had because you did such a good job setting up our trip.

You have a beautiful country and wonderful Icelanders. Everyone was gracious, warm and welcoming. We really enjoyed the snorkeling and the boat ride. We especially enjoyed stumbling onto the festivals. While in Norourland Eystra, stayed Daeli, we saw a Icelandic singer with a wonderful voice, Egill Olafsson in some ancient ruins at night that took our breath away.

And while in Grundafjordur we saw a parade of four colors with music and fun afterwards until 11:30 pm. It was cold to us but we stuck it out.

A Nature Research Journal EditorialWorthy reports are as frequently encountered in Washington DC as grand monuments and are just as likely to be ignored by the locals.

But lawmakers will fail their constituents if they manage to ignore the latest study on competitiveness by the National Academies. The report, Rising Above the Gathering Storm, addresses resurgent fears that the United States' longstanding global leadership in research and development is on the wane.

Written by a panel chaired by Norman Augustine, former chief executive of technology corporation Lockheed Martin, it offers several concrete recommendations designed to keep that leadership intact. Whether the US government pays any attention or not, its competitors will find the panel's findings well worth a look. Whereas previous studies of this kind have focused primarily on research funding, this one concentrates much of its attention on improving the nation's scientific literacy.

It calls for the annual recruitment of some 10,000 science and maths teachers, proposing that science undergraduates be lured into the classroom with generous scholarships, with the lofty goal of improving science education at school for some 10 million people.

This proposal may appear to some US politicians to be central planning run amok and it doesn't really address the low pay and social standing of teachers in the United States. But it does have potential and precedent: an existing programme called Teach for America has succeeded in recruiting thousands of young college graduates to teach in the nation's most troubled neighbourhoods.

Other recommendations of note include a call for the creation of a new energy-research agency that would conduct low-cost, high-risk, high-reward research projects. This would be modelled on the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), which has been highly successful in backing exciting, basic research that may spawn useful technology.

Another new entity would be set up expressly to arrange for the construction of scientific facilities. It suggests a new category of generous grants that would allow young researchers early in their career to firmly establish their own lines of enquiry.

Furthermore, it calls for changes in US immigration policy that would make it easier for foreign students and scientists to stay in the country to continue their careers. Both these suggestions will require serious political commitment to implement but they would go a long way towards fostering fresh scientific talent. Senators Lamar Alexander (Republican, Tennessee) and Jeff Bingaman (Democrat, New Mexico), who commissioned the study, must now try to drum up support on Capitol Hill for the implementation of its recommendations.

They face an uphill battle, given the size of the US budget deficit and inevitable political resistance to such concepts as further federal involvement in school education.

The United States' competitors, in Europe and the Far East, also need to consider such measures, and might actually find some of them easier to implement. You are viewing the new design. Worthy reports are as frequently encountered in Washington DC as grand monuments and are just as likely to be ignored by the locals.
